When my daughters’ homeland crumbled in the earthquake, a lot of really good people put action to their compassion for Haiti.
Of course, there were a few, very vocal people who were truly horrible. Some said Haiti was money pit, undeserving of our investment in her. Others demanded (rather condescendingly) to know why Haiti was such a mess in the first place.
Well, that’s a good question, even if it was asked arrogantly and callously. The answer is complex, but one essential element of it is really important for Americans to understand- not the callous, arrogant Americans necessarily but the good intentioned ones.
