Galatians 4:4 tells us that when the fullness of time had come, God sent his son into the world to redeem it. John calls this Son the “Word of God” (John 1:1).
God has always communicated with man. He walked with Adam in the garden, called Moses’ name from a burning bush, and soothed Elijah with a “still small voice”. He has spoken through the prophets, great acts of deliverance, and Creation itself. He has spoken through visions and dreams. This, our wondrous Creator, wants to know man and be known by him. God is a God who speaks.
But in the fullness of time, He spoke anew. He sent His Son as the physical embodiment of His Word. It is an act so profound, a Word of such weight, that all Creation must incline its ear and ask, What is God saying? What is it He most wants us to hear and know through this Word of God, His Son? Is it a word of judgement for the nations awash in brutality, injustice, and oppression? Is it condemnation for all humanity fallen so far away from the perfection of the law? The Word of God could have rightly spoken all of this and more but He didn’t. He brought a message of redemption instead.
The Word speaks of grace and truth (John 1:14)…
Life and light in the darkness (John 1:4)…
The Word speaks of the year of the Lord’s favor (Luke 4:19)…
The Word is Emmanuel, God is with us.
This is the heart of God.
